What is the essential ingredient to M-PCIe? The answer is MIPI’s new physical layer or. M-PHY. M-PCIe will replace the PCIe PHY layer with M-PHY and keep the rest of the PCIe protocol stack unchanged including: data link layer, transaction layer, software layers and so forth.
M-PHY specification provides a serial interface technology with high bandwidth capabilities, which is particularly developed for mobile applications to obtain low pin count combined with very good power efficiency.
Mobile devices require wider bandwidth, lower-pin count (serial) and higher power-efficient (network) interfaces. For PCI Express going mobile, replacing the current PCI Express PHY layer with MIPI's M-PHY was an excellent choice.
